Tatsuya Nakatani is an artist and percussionist from Osaka, Japan. Since moving to the United States in 1994 he has produced over 60 recordings in North America and Europe.

Tatsuya Nakatani style combines elements of free jazz, rock and noise with the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music. Nakatani achieves his uniquely moving sound by combining his own invented instruments with a large number of traditional instruments. Touring nearly constantly for a wide range of concerts and classes helps fuel his intense non-linear music. The many opportunities to perform provide fresh life to his music through his open willingness to share his energy, culture, music, and self on a global human scale.

"The third collaboration from the duo of Israeli saxophonist Assif Tsahar and Japanese percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani, an amazing journey in tone and rhythm from two kindred spirits through 20 short, inventive, and stunning improvisations."(squidco)

Anatomy of a Moment

"Percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani's approach to music is visceral, non-linear and intuitively primitive, expressing an unusually strong spirit while avoiding any categorization. He creates sound via both traditional and extended percussion techniques, utilizing drums, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects and bells, as well as various sticks, kitchen tools and homemade bows, all of which manifest in an intense and organic music that represents a very personal sonic world. His approach is steeped in the sensibilities of free improvisation, experimental music, jazz, rock, and noise, and yet retains the sense of space and quiet beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music."(newatlantisrecords)

Michiyuki

"A Kurosawa-esque meditative and haunting journey featuring master musicians on percussion and Japanese flutes."(cdbaby)

Three on a Thin Line

"This live recording from April 2009 documents the first ever meeting of Israel veteran free improviser and clarinetist Harold Rubin and prolific double bass master Barre Phillips, who came to take part in the double bassists' summit Deep Tones for Peace events in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, with Tatsuya Nakatani. This totally improvised meeting was recorded in the Levontin 7 club in Tel Aviv."(allaboutjazz)

Come Sunday

"Here is a mighty duet recording between sax great Assif Tsahar and über drummer Tatsuya Nakatani. While the notion of improvisation is at the heart of all 11 pieces here, it's far from all that there is. Tsahar is one of the great champion's of tonal dynamics. His esthetic is dictated by what is actually called for in discovering the way a tonal center displays not only color and openness, but also rhythmic possibility. The way Nakatani plays through this adds not only dimension, but also depth. Check out "J Walk," with its restrained palette that nonetheless opens onto a dais of slow-turning phrases based on a beat that is not so much played, but illustrated. It's a question of language and punctuation in a sonic setting."(allmusic)
